This evening we have the fortune of being in the delightful company of Red Pig Flower, an unconventional and true artist in all senses.
To get to know her better we met her at the San Giorgio Theater in Udine at the “MuSt” event in occasion of the Far East Festival 2015.
Even though we had to wait till very late to hear what she had to say, it was certainly worth the wait.
URLOPOP – Hi Red Pig Flower, tell us about yourself, where are you from, where do you live now?
RED PIG FLOWER – Nice to meet you too, it is very hard to say where do I come from, as I am half and as an artist working on project of “deleting nationality”, also I move my base quite often… anyway currently I base in Berlin, and I have Japanese/Korean cultural background.
URLOPOP – You have a very curious stage name, can you explain to our readers the meaning of your name?
RED PIG FLOWER – It is not only my stage name but also my real name i choose, and decide to live with, as I do not concern paper name or given name is my “real name” I think your real name is the name what you choose to live with and “red pig flower “ is my real name, red means reality, pig means desire, and flower means dream, and I do my best to prove dream and reality circling together by your desire, that’s where my name’s come from and that’s the way I live as an artist.

URLOPOP – How long have you been working as a DJ? And how long as a producer?
RED PIG FLOWER- I think I start about 10 years ago , after I broke up with my band, and as a electronica music producer I think about 5 years ago I started again, when I was a kid I used to make kinda punk rock with wired lyrics lol
URLOPOP – What is your favourite kind of music?
RED PIG FLOWER – Hypnotic kind of music, which brings you to another dimensions.
URLOPOP – What kind of music do you prefer to play for your audience? And how you define your style as a
RED PIG FLOWER – It is really depends, when I have very long time slot in small club in front of sort of zombie crowds, late nite, I prefer play slow and very hypnotic and experimental, but when I am on the stage kind of place in main time , I enjoy to play techno with big bass, but still whatever time I play I try to put abit of hypnotic sounds with percussions.
URLOPOP – We have read that besides being an international DJ, you are also a well-known painter and artist. In your opinion what are the pros and cons of the arts of music and painting? Have you ever tried to merge these two arts in one of your projects?
RED PIG FLOWER – Hard to say I am a painter(and well known is even more harder..lol), YES I do paint , and I do performance art or installations too, and I treat music production as a sound art, So overall, for me anything can give people impression can be an art, therefore your way of live your life can be an art, or anything…. I never separate art and music as a different things, the thing is the way you look at it, just for me the struggling point is not about genre of art ,it is more about the point when art became a job and became the way to make money, how you can compromise your self….
URLOPOP – Why did you move from Korea to Japan and then to the UK and Germany?
RED PIG FLOWER – To make long story short, I just always try to find inspirations, and I just always try to develop myself, that’s it, when you feel this is time to move then you move, I am still in the journey to find some place I can call “home” , for now I do not have any.
URLOPOP – Having experienced both Asian and European cultures, what do you think are the major cultural differences?
RED PIG FLOWER –Asian more think themselves in a group, European think themselves more as an indivisual than group so they enjoy themselves more without caring witness, but still every asian countries are different and every european countries are different, so hard to tell.
URLOPOP – Tell us about your studies and how important they are in the job you are doing now?
RED PIG FLOWER –I graduated 2 universities as a “journalism” and “fine art”major, and now I take a break from formal studies, but I try to learn something everyday from everything. there are so many things I am studying like languages, sound productions, way of live life….etc, for me everything is important and helped my career.
But these days, may be I need to learn “cut down” something, which I am not good at all, I should concern more I have limited time and brain capacity, but I just care about too many things like a stupid, I need to be more simple I think….
URLOPOP – Do you play any musical instruments?
RED PIG FLOWER –I used to play a bit of piano and a bit of guitar, but Really basic stuffs, Now I am happy with my laptop and play keyboard.
URLOPOP – Would you like to mention someone that has worked with you and you would like to thank?
RED PIG FLOWER – So many people…. everyone who I worked with are helped me and teached me, I try to say thanks to everyone as much as possible, I say thank you a lot.
URLOPOP – What are your projects for the future?
RED PIG FLOWER – I wish I can build up some infinity world which doesn’t have limit, As my biggest struggling of my life is “why every beautiful things going to rusted, especially in physical form”(may be that’s why I prefer digital files and art these days more than physical arts, after i had to throw out many paintings and vinyls by running out of space and money) I wish I can build up something infinite world with all the beautiful memories from human history, that would be great.
As a short term project, I need to organize few release for my label “sound of vast” and hope I can make 1 more exhibition this year with sound installation and paintings, Thanks :)
